Bangkok Airways is a Thailand based airline company which came into existence in the year 1968, which was then known as Sahakol Air. This airline started its operation with a 9 seater chartered aircraft, named as "Trade Wind". The chartered service came from OICC (an American based construction company), USOM and some other firms engaged into oil and natural gas exploration in Thailand.
Since tourism was growing in Bangkok and thus arose the need for air transport that led to economic growth of the country; there was a requirement of fulfilling this demand and hence Bangkok Airways came into existence officially in the year 1986, as a private owned domestic airline.
In the beginning the airline offered only scheduled services from Bangkok to Krabi, Korat and Surin. However they now have over more than 20 routes, scheduled flights within and outside Thailand to Myanmar, Laos, Malaysia, Singapore, India, Bangladesh and Maldives.
Bangkok Airways has its own privately owned airports at Samui that was established in the year 1989, Sukhothai Airport that was established in 1996 and Trat Airport that was established in 2002, thereby increasing air transport hubs in Thailand leading to increase in air traffic volumes.
